FILM REVIEW: Pieces of a Dream
By Brandon Brooks
Sentinel Contributing Writer

The conscious film movement has been resurrected thanks to the genius mind of director/writer/producer extraordinaire Sherman “Skee” Skinner. Skee as he likes to be called, along with his long time friend and college buddy Paul Branton, co-wrote the film “Pieces of a Dream”. This innovative film has captured and wowed audiences across America due to it’s “real-life” approach.

“Pieces of a Dream” is based on four kindred souls - a priest seeking truth, a single mother seeking redemption, her teenage son seeking acceptance, and a reclusive artist seeking love. These four souls are examined through this wildly innovative tale of morality that poses the difficult question, “does sin have weight?”

I was priviliged to attend a private screening at the City Club in Downtown Los Angeles. And let me be the first to say that the film is fantastic. I was absolutely blown away by the films raw approach yet captivated by the conscious spin. I didn’t expect “Pieces of a Dream” to be so raw in expression and simultaneously be respectful to real life issues and emotions. To be totally honest, I forgot I was watching a film half of the time. I was very much into the films story line and how it would end that I forgot I was in a room filled with over 100 people. When the movie concluded it took me a second to recognize I was in a ball room full of people.

“Pieces of a Dream,” is very up front and in your face. It doesn’t sugar coat societal problems and that’s what I loved about the film. In fact, writers Skee and Branton dive head first into many of our communities “taboo” subjects. The audience will experience life through the eyes of four different characters that tackle four different issues. Each of these characters is going through their day to day struggle separately but in the end, all of the characters individual decisions affect the community as a whole. The film was very well written and beautifully shot. Every inner-city around the world will be able to relate to the story line.

I got a chance to catch up with the man of the hour director extraordinaire Skee Skinner and I asked him to share with me and our readers what his overall mission was. Skee said, “Our mission is not to only entertain, but stimulate healthy dialogue and specific actions to find solutions to these issues. I truly believe I was put here to make films; it’s as simple as that. In my continuous effort to raise the awareness of conscious films, I hope my body of work touches you and inspires you to dream beyond the limitations of society”.
